The Advanced Psychology - Level 4 Course is designed for people who wish to gain an advanced understanding of principles and practice of Psychology.

PLEASE NOTE: Students must have completed the Psychology - Level 3 award or an equivalent introductory course in a Psychology before undertaking this programme.

The aims of the course are to enhance students’ knowledge of psychology theory and to develop a broad understanding of theories applied to practical aspects of social and cognitive psychology, child development and adaptive behaviour.

The course also teaches research methods and interpretation of research data.

On successful completion of the course you will receive a recognised level 4 award (Comparable to working at NVQ Level 4).

The Course Includes the Following Units:-

  • Unit One – Perspectives on Psychology

The following topics are covered: What is psychology? The biological approach, Behaviourist & cognitive approaches, Person-centred approaches and Methods and debate in psychology.

  • Unit Two – Social Psychology

The following topics are covered:  Attitudes, Social influence, Obedience, Social cognition and Applied social psychology.

  • Unit Three – Cognitive Psychology

The following topics are covered: Perception, Attention, Remembering, Forgetting, Language, Thinking and Problem solving & artificial intelligence.

  • Unit Four – Child Development

The following topics are covered:  Issues in child development, Cognitive development, Development of language & communication, Social perception and Moral development.

  • Unit Five – Psychology & Atypical Behaviour

The following topics are covered: Definition & diagnosis of atypical behaviour, Treatments of atypical behaviour and Emotional disorders.

  • Unit Six – Research Methods
The following topics are covered:  Research methods, Research issues and Data Analysis.

Course Duration:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. The course will take approximately 100 hours of study to complete.

Pre-Requirements:

To register for this course, students MUST have previously completed one of the following: GCSE Psychology grade A-B; Distance Learning Centre’s Psychology Course (Level 3); or another Accredited Level 3 qualification in psychology or equivalent.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the course is self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.

Assessment:

You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Most coursework consists of short paragraph answers to set questions. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.
 
Qualification:
 
The award is gained from successfully completed coursework so there is no exam to complete.
 
On successful completion of this course, students will receive a Level 4 Advanced Psychology Award.
 
This award has been independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and is comparable to working at NVQ Level 4.

The award is issued through NCFE. NCFE is recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators ('regulators') for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.
