The Animal Care Level 2 Course is designed to provide you with all the basic skills and knowledge to enable you to successfully understand the care which a wide range of animals need. From horses to hamsters, from parrots to pole cats, we cover all the key issues that you, as an animal enthusiast, are likely to need to know to ensure that the animal thrives in a happy, hygienic and suitable environment. We also tell you how to protect yourself from what could be dangerous circumstances so that neither the animal nor you are hurt.
On successful completion of this course students will receive an accredited Level 2 Certificate Award and a Distance Learning Diploma.
The home study courses are split into the following Units:
- Unit One – Getting Started

- Unit Two – History & Pet Ownership
The following topics are covered: Domestication; Animals in the media; Classification of animals; Types of common pets; Choosing the right pet; and Therapeutic value.
- Unit Three – Safety, Welfare, Health & Hygiene
The following topics are covered: Safety and zoonosis; Correct handling methods; Typical restraints; Vehicle safety; Micro-chips and other ID methods; Pet proofing; Animal rescue and welfare organisations; How to clean an pet’s bed/living areas; Dealing with pests and parasites; and Preventative health.
- Unit Four – Anatomy & Physiology
The following topics are covered: Cells and tissues; Locomotion; Digestive system; Urinary system; Circulatory and respiratory systems; Reproductive system; Endocrine system; and Nervous system.
- Unit Five – Animal First Aid
The following topics are covered: Aims; Handling and transport; Examination and history taking; ABC; Shock; Wounds and burns; Fractures; Poisoning and fitting; Diarrhoea and vomiting; Administering medication; and First-aid kit.

- Unit Eleven – Snakes & Lizards
The following topics are covered: Housing and general care; Bearded Dragons; Geckos; Blue Tongued Skinks; Green Anoles; Corn Snakes; King and Milk Snakes; Ball Pythons; More difficult to keep reptiles; and Common diseases.
- Unit Twelve – Tortoises, Turtles & Terrapins

- Unit Thirteen – Insects & Amphibians
The following topics are covered: Why have a creepy crawly as a pet?; Spiders and Scorpions; Stick and leaf insects; Praying mantis; Beatles, centipedes and millipedes; Snails, slugs and worms; Frogs and toads; and Common problems.
- Unit Fourteen – Hamsters, Gerbil, Rats & Mice

- Unit Seventeen – Chinchillas

The following topics are covered: Safety; Types; What to do with injured wildlife; Orphans; and Should we keep wildlife as pets?.
Pre-Requirements:
There are no particular entry requirements.
Course Duration & Support:
Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the home study courses are self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.
Assessment:
You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Students will be required to compose relevant stories and extracts for their coursework. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.
Certification:
The Certification is gained from your coursework so there is no exam to complete. On successful completion of this Distance Learning Animal Care Course students will be awarded an Animal Care Certificate of achievement by NCFE.
This course has been accredited under a NCFE IIQ Licence and the course measurable learning outcomes have been benchmarked at Level 2 (using Ofqual’s Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) level descriptors) to allow you to consider the depth of study, difficulty, and level of achievement involved.
