The Responding to Substance Misuse Awareness - Level 3 Course is designed for students who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice of Substance Misuse Awareness. No prior knowledge is required.
 
The course is designed for study by distance learning at work or at home. Students receive course manual, assignments and study guide plus tutor support by mail and email. You can start at any time and plan your studies over a period of up to one year from the time of registration.
 
On successful completion of the course you will receive a recognised level 3 award (Comparable to working at A Level or NVQ Level 3).

Objectives:

The Objective of the Course is to cover a wide range of issues related to substance misuse, social effects, health and the various responses and interventions at a deeper and more comprehensive level than the Level 2 Drugs Awareness course.
 
The Course Includes the Following 6 Units:-
  • Unit One – Understanding Drug Use

The following topics are covered: History of drug use; The effects of drugs; Drug facts; and Understanding attitudes and values about drugs.

  • Unit Two – Recognising & Responding to Drug Use

The following topics are covered: Know the signs and symptoms relating to drug use; The laws in relation to drug use; Problems associated with drug use; Harm reduction; Responses to drug use; and drug services.

  • Unit Three – Communicating with Young People about Drugs

The following topic is covered: Using effective communication skills when talking to young people about drugs.

  • Unit Four – Understanding solvent and volatile substance abuse (VSA)

The following topic is covered: Reasons why VSA should be a cause for concern.

  • Unit Five – Awareness of issues concerning alcohol and young people

The following topics are covered: Issues surrounding the use/misuse of alcohol; The different types of alcohol consumption and their potential effects; The consequences associated with different types and levels of alcohol consumption; and attitudes towards and the impact of alcohol use on young people.

  • Unit Six - Blood borne viral infections related to drug use
The following topics are covered: Understand the nature, extent and effects of blood borne viruses; understand how to prevent the transmission of blood-borne viruses; and understand the range of attitudes and values about blood-borne viral infections. 
 
Course Duration:
 
Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. The course will take approximately 80 hours of study to complete.
 
Pre-Requirements:
 
There are no particular entry requirements.

Once you have enrolled, you will have access to your own personal tutor by mail or email. You will receive full tutor support for a 12 month period.
 
Qualification:
 
The award is gained from successfully completed coursework so there is no exam to complete.
 
On successful completion of this course, students will receive a Level 3 Responding to Substance Misuse Awareness Award.
 
This award has been independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and is comparable to working at A Level or NVQ Level 3.
NCFE

The award is issued through NCFE. NCFE is recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators ('regulators') for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.
