The Interior Design - Level 3 Course is designed for students who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice of Interior Design, and plan to establish an interior design small business. No prior knowledge is required.

Interior Design is a practice concerned with anything that is found inside a building's space - walls, windows, doors, finishes, textures, light, furnishings and furniture. All of these elements are used by interior designers to develop a functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing space.
 
On successful completion of the home study courses students will receive a recognised level 3 award (Comparable to working at A Level or NVQ Level 3).

The Objectives of the home study courses are to:

  • Describe the history of interior design, classic design styles and the work of leading designers
  • Investigate the seven design elements which contribute to a design
  • Explore the room elements which influence a design effect
  • Undertake an interior design project
  • Develop a business plan for establishing a design business
  • Identify the tools of the trade

The Home Study Courses Include the Following 6 Units:-

  • Unit One – The Background

The following topics are covered: The origins of Interior design; Influences through the ages; Great Designers of our recent past; and Defining a style.

  • Unit Two – Design Elements
The following topics are covered: Space; Colour; Balance; Texture & Pattern; Scale; Line; and Form.
  • Unit Three – Room Elements

The following topic is covered: Furniture; Flooring; Lighting; Walls; Windows; Doors; Fabrics; and Accessories.

  • Unit Four – The Project

The following topic is covered: Space planning; Choosing a colour scheme; Choosing flooring; Choosing wall treatments; Choosing lighting; Choosing furniture; Choosing window dressings; Arranging the furniture; Choosing accessories; and The results.

  • Unit Five – Making a Living from Interior Design

The following topics are covered: Have you got what it takes to be an Interior Designer?; Setting up a small business (Business plan, Tax, VAT, Insurance, Health & safety).

  • Unit Six – Tools of the Trade

The home study courses also include a CD ROM which contains colour versions of all the pictures and graphics used in the course materials.

Pre-Requirements:

There are no particular entry requirements.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the home study courses are self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.

Assessment:

You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Most coursework consists of short paragraph answers to set questions. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post. 

Qualification:
 

The award is gained from successfully completed coursework so there is no exam to complete.

On successful completion of this course, students will receive a Level 3 Interior Design Award.

This award has been independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and is comparable to working at A Level or NVQ Level 3.
NCFE

The award is issued through NCFE. NCFE is recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators ('regulators') for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.
