As a Beauty Therapist, you would usually work in a salon with other beauticians, hairdressers etc. Or you can, if you wish, decide to be your own boss and run a ‘mobile’ business, visiting your clients in their own homes. Whatever path you choose, it’s a job you’ll love doing, and you’ll make new friends too!
 
The great thing about our Nail Technician course is that you can study in your own time, at your own pace, from home or from work. You will also have your own professional personal tutor offering tutor support by e-mail and post for a full 12 months from the day you receive the course.

  • Unit 4 – Understanding Chemicals

The following topics are covered: Matter and energy; Properties of matter; Energy; Element, atom, compound and molecule; Vapours; Chemical reactions; Catalysts; Adhesion; Primers; Monomers and polymers; and Light and energy.

  • Unit 5 – Anatomy & Physiology

The following topics are covered: Cells, tissues and membranes; Cell structure and function; Cell membranes; Nucleus and nucleolus; Cytoplasm; Cell functions; Cell division; DNA; Body tissue; Epithelial; Muscle; Nervous; Membranes; Skeletal system; and Muscular system.

  • Unit 6 – Nail Anatomy

  • Unit 7 – Skin & its Disorders

The following topics are covered: Function of the skin; Skins structure; Epidermis; Dermis; Nourishment; Nerves; Skin glands; and Skin disorders.

  • Unit 8 – Client Consultation

The following topics are covered: Clients’ needs; Clients’ lifestyle; and Client record card.

  • Unit 9 – Manicuring

The following topics are covered: Supplies; Sanitation of implements; Materials and containers; Nail cosmetic supplies; Table top set up; Nail shape; Plain manicure; Finishing the nails; Male manicure; Paraffin wax treatment; and Hand massage.

  • Unit 10 – Basic Pedicure

  • Unit 11 – Advanced Nail Techniques

  • Unit 12 – Acrylic Overlay Tips

The following topics are covered: Acrylic powers; Supplies; Pre-service; Application; Refills; Maintenance; and Removal.

  • Unit 13 – U.V Gel System

The following topics are covered: Preparation; French manicure; Gel maintenance; and Gel removal.

  • Unit 14 – Nail Wraps

The following topics are covered: Supplies; Pre-service; Application; Maintaining; Removing; Repairing fabric wraps; and Nail art.

  • Unit 15 – Areas of Nail Technician Work

The following topics are covered: Mobile; Home-based; and Salon-based.

  • Unit 16 – Safety at Work

The following topics are covered: Control of substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH); and Electric files.

  • Unit 17 – Aromatherapy recipes for Manicures and Pedicures
The following topics are covered: Cuticle softening treatment; Nail strengthening treatment; Tires, swollen feet; and Cracked and dry feet.

Pre-Requirements:

There are no particular entry requirements.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the course is self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.

Assessment:

You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Most coursework consists of short paragraph answers to set questions. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.

Qualification:

The award is gained from your successfully completed coursework so there is no exam to complete.

On successful completion of this course students will be awarded a Beauty Therapy Level 2 Award.

This award has been independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and is comparable to working at GCSE or NVQ Level 2.

The award is issued through NCFE. NCFE is recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators ('regulators') for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.
 
The course has been mapped against the National Occupational Standards for the Beauty industry set by habia.
 
Please Note: Once you have completed the course we advise that you gain as much practical experience as you can, and once you receive your qualification, it is advised that you obtain the relevant insurance.
