If you have ever wondered why people do the things they do, then the Psychology Online – Level 3 Course is for you!

Psychology is the study of mind and behaviour and so in this course you will discover how psychologists have come a long way in understanding human behaviour and the mental processes that underlie our actions.

The course has been written by Dr Matthew Smith and Elizabeth Ottley. Matthew Smith is a former Associate Professor of Psychology at Liverpool Hope University with nearly 20 years’ experience of teaching and research in Psychology. His work in the media even included a stint as the resident psychologist/parapsychologist on the television show Most Haunted. Elizabeth Ottley is a postgraduate student in Psychology.

On successful completion of the home study courses students will receive a recognised level 3 Diploma Certificate (Comparable to working at A Level or NVQ Level 3).

The programme aims to show:

  • How scientists have studied the mind, brain and behaviour
  • How our understanding of the world develops as we grow up
  • How much we are influenced by other people
  • How our thoughts and actions are related to brain activity
  • How memory works, why we forget, and how to improve your memory
  • How psychologists explain personality and intelligence
  • How psychology can be applied in the real world.

Key Features of the Psychology Online Course are:

  • Setting the scene’ boxes: These describe relevant, and sometimes surprising, case studies that illustrate points that are made in the main text.
  • ‘From the archives’ boxes: These make reference to key research studies published in academic journals. These bring you into contact with the methods and procedures used by psychologists to test and develop their theories.
  • ‘Have a go’ boxes: These encourage active learning, in which you are more involved and engaged in the learning process.
  • Targeted suggestions for further reading.

The course is divided into seven modules. In each module you are introduced to the main theories associated with that area of psychology. Modules 2-6 are each separated into a Part A and a Part B to aid understanding.

The Course covers the following Units:-

  • Unit 1: The Science of Psychology
  • Unit 2: Grow Up: Developmental Psychology
  • Unit 3: You and Me, Me and You: Social Psychology
  • Unit 4: Mind Your Brain: Biological Psychology
  • Unit 5: Thinking About Thinking: Cognitive Psychology
  • Unit 6: We Are Not The Same: Individual Differences
  • Unit 7: Applying Psychology
