The Understanding MRSA – Level 2 Course gives students an overview of this important subject and it covered over 3 separate units.
The first two units will enable you, the learner, to gain an understanding of the different agents that can cause infection and how they grow and mutate; how infection is spread and the measures that can be taken to prevent this from taking place. In the third unit MRSA is examined in more depth and you will understand how it has become a hospital ‘super bug’ resistant to antibiotics. Also in the third unit you will learn what your role and legal obligations are in reducing its spread.
It is difficult to pick up any newspaper in which mention is not made of ‘hospital super bugs’ and the relentless rise in the numbers of patients acquiring these infections, particularly MRSA, whilst in hospital or in residential care in the UK.
This rise and the associated media attention, has led in turn, to the Government setting targets for reducing the number of deaths arising from these infections.
To achieve these targets, it is necessary for all staff working in NHS Hospital Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, nursing and social care to be trained to understand these infections, what they are, how they can infect patients and, importantly, the measures that can be used to control cross infection. This course is intended to provide this training for staff working in these areas.
You don’t need any previous qualifications to take this course. It is designed to encourage your own personal development in an area important to you.
Upon verification of the workbook activities, structured questions and work-based assignments, you will receive a certificate from Ascentis, a nationally recognised awarding body.
The programme provides reading material designed to support workshop style delivery or as a flexible learning package, which you can work through at your own pace.
Each unit asks you to complete a number of structured questions to ensure that you have the underpinning knowledge required and confirm that learning has taken place. There are also work-based assignments, which you are required to complete to show how you have applied your learning directly to work practices and that you understand how it all fits in with current policies and procedures. Your tutor or trainer must assess your answers and responses to the structured questions and the assignments for each unit.
The activities and assessments workbook that is included in your learning pack contains all the structured and work-based assignment questions, as well as exercises and activities for revision and to reinforce your learning. These questions must also be assessed. Your tutor or trainer will explain more about using the workbook and about submitting your work.
On successful completion of the course you will receive a recognised level 2 award (Comparable to working at GCSE or NVQ Level 2).
The Course covers the following Units:-
- Unit 1: Agents of Infection

Unit 2: Transmission of Pathogens, Infection and Control
