The Understanding Substance Misuse (QCF) – Level 3 Course leads to a fully accredited qualification and is designed to introduce the student to a variety of areas related to the use and misuse of a wide range of drugs.

This Understanding Substance Misuse QCF qualification helps to develop increased understanding of these issues and the possible responses and interventions.

The programme aims to:

  • Provide a nationally accredited certificated programme in a wide range of substance misuse issues and the variety of responses and interventions available.
  • Provide a flexible learning opportunity that is accessible to a wide range of learners.
  • Provide the student with knowledge and understanding that can be used by those who either personally, voluntary or professionally have a special interest in this field.

The programme raises an opportunity for personal development and occupational competence in an area identified by government policy as one requiring special attention. The overall Government’s policy is laid out in ‘Tackling Drugs to Build a Better Britain 1998’ and the ‘Updated Drugs Strategy 2002’. This programme should contribute to the strategy through an educational model.

The programme is a great resource for anyone interested in the subject but is particularly aimed at those who work directly and regularly with people with alcohol or drugs misuse problems or those who would like to pursue a career in these areas.

This course in particular is widely used to train drugs and alcohol workers, as well as generic professionals serving young and/or vulnerable people, to support them in achieving their DANOS competences. Mapping to the DANOS competences has shown that this programme covers a broad range of relevant DANOS units. The course provides also comprehensive “underpinning knowledge” for the substance misuse units of the NVQ and SVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care.

The qualification has been mapped to the Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS) and the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework.

It helps people to develop their knowledge, skills and competence in the following DANOS units:

AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
AB2 Support individuals who are substance users
AB5 Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users
AD1 Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects
AF2 Carry out assessment to identify and prioritise needs

On successful completion of the course you will receive a recognised level 3 Qualification (Equivalent to A Level or NVQ Level 3).

The Course covers the following Units:-

  • Unit 1: Understanding Drug Use: Facts, Effects, Symptoms and Attitudes
  • Unit 2: Understanding Responses to Substance Misuse: Legislation, Harm Reduction and Interventions
  • Unit 3: Understanding Alcohol and Drug Use in Young People

Ascentis Level 2 Qualification

Ascentis is a Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (QCA)-approved national awarding body that designs user-friendly qualifications and supports these with the highest possible standard of customer service. Unusually, it is also a Quality Assurance Agency (QAA)-licensed Authorised Validating Agency for Access to Higher Education.

Ascentis was established in 1975 as a partnership scheme between universities and colleges of further education. It was the very first “Open College” and its initial aim was to provide innovative Access to Higher Education Qualifications for adult learners. Over the past thirty one years the membership has increased significantly and the portfolio of qualifications has expanded to include a wide range of curriculum areas.
