The Physics IGCSE Course is designed to develop (1) a broad understanding of facts, concepts and principles, (2) skills in physical investigation and (3) an ability to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of modern scientific developments.

In combination with other suitable IGCSE entry subjects the course is an ideal preparation for those who wish to go on to study Physics at AS and A2 level.

Each lesson of the Physics IGCSE course begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study. Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment tests. The course includes12 Tutor-marked assignments of which two a mock exam papers. Students will need to access the internet to carry out some of the course activities.

The course is designed to be accessible to students who may have only a limited previous background in science. If you have some background in Physics then you should find that some of the lessons build upon things that you have met before in your earlier studies.

The Syllabus:

The Physics IGCSE course is designed to prepare students for the Edexcel IGCSE inPhysics (4PH0) Specification for examinations in June 2012 and later years.

Examinations

Assessment is by two written examinations. In both papers, students may be required to perform calculations, draw graphs and describe, explain and interpret physical phenomena. Some of the question content will be unfamiliar to students; these questions are designed to assess data-handling skills and the ability to apply physical principles to unfamiliar information.

Paper 1: 2 Hours (Untiered) - The total number of marks is 120, two thirds of the overall total. The paper examines all of the specification content and all of the assessment objectives. There will be a range of compulsory short-answer, structured questions, which are ramped (gradually increase in level of difficulty) to ensure accessibility for less able students, as well as to stretch more able students.

Paper 2: 1 Hour (Untiered) - The total number of marks is 60, one third of the overall total. This paper also examines all of the specification content, but will focus on investigation and the analysis of data.

No coursework is required.

Additional Reading:

You will need: Edexcel IGCSE Physics Student Book with ActiveBook CD by Penny Johnson, Steve Wooley, and Brian Arnold (ISBN-10: 0435966901 - ISBN-13: 978-0435966904)

Technical Support:

Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they need to keep in regular contact. The essential relationship between student and tutor begins with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan.

All tutors are fully qualified teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. So when you enrol on our home study courses you can be assured of the assistance of a professionally qualified subject specific tutor.

We don’t set a limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advice and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA’s) in every one of our home study courses. These help the student consolidate the learning he or she has done and prepare for examinations.

All tutors have a local rate telephone number such as a 0845 number. This means that when you phone your tutor it will only cost you the price of a local call. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.

Examination Centres:

To request a list of Edexcel registered centres please send an email to the following address: private.candidate@edexcel.com.

Edexcel are currently in the process of putting together a comprehensive list of those centres who provide assistance to private candidates and this will available before the end of the year. For the time being when you send an e-mail, please ensure that you give details of where you live, such as county or postcode and information on what qualifications and specifications you wish to enter.

Nearest Examination Dates:

Please review the IGCSE Overview page for detailed information on possible examination dates and procedures.

IGCSE Examination Fees:

On average the IGCSE examination fee is approximately £35.00 per subject regardless of the amount of examinations, plus an administration fee which is at the discretion of the exam centre.

Studying from Abroad:

It is possible to study any of our home study courses from anywhere in the world. The IGCSE is offered to students in over 150 countries. We advise contacting the British Council or your local schools and colleges to enquire if they can offer the Edexcel IGCSE examinations.
