The Science IGCSE Course combines the most interesting aspects of IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This is an ideal introduction for students who require a grounding in elementary science which has become a requirement for many important occupations, such as Teaching, Nursing & midwifery.
IGCSE Science (Double Award) is worth TWO IGCSEs. Written by experienced science teachers and subject specialists, Marion Green, Michael Jones and Philip West, the course provides excellent preparation for the IGCSE Science examinations. Each lesson of the Combined GCSE course begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study. Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment questions. There are 25 tutor-marked assignments including a substantial mock exam. Students will need to have access to the internet to complete this course.
The course was developed to meet the requirements of Edexcel Double Award Science (Specification 4SC0)
, which will be first examined in June 2011. The IGCSE Science specification includes e exam papers which are the Paper 1 material from the three main single science IGCSEs: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each exam lasts 2 hours. The exam is Untiered.
Each paper will assess biology/chemistry/physics across all Assessment Objectives as set out in the specification. The maximum mark for each paper will be 120. There will be a range of compulsory short-answer structured questions which gradually increase in level of difficulty to ensure accessibility for less-able students, as well as to stretch more-able students.
Students may be required to perform calculations, draw graphs and describe, explain and interpret scientific phenomena. Some of the question content will be unfamiliar to students; these questions are designed to assess data-handling skills and the ability to apply scientific principles to unfamiliar information. Questions targeted at grades A* Ė B will include questions designed to test knowledge, understanding and skills at a higher level, including some questions requiring longer prose answers.
The home study course is divided into three modules:
This section is in 5 modules containing 23 lessons, with 7 TMAs, including a substantial mock Exam.
The five modules are:
Module 1: Cells and Organisms
Module 2: Plant and Animal Physiology A
Module 3: Plant and Animal Physiology B
Module 4: Inheritance
Module 5: Ecology and Food Production
This section is in 6 modules containing 26 lessons, with 7 TMAs including a substantial mock Exam.
The six modules are:
Module 1: Principles of Chemistry
Module 2: Chemistry of the Elements
Module 3: Organic Chemistry
Module 4: Physical Chemistry
Module 5: Chemistry in Society
Module 6: Investigative Skills
This section is in 7 modules containing 29 lessons, with 11 TMAs, including a substantial mock Exam.
The seven modules are:
Module 1: Forces and Motion
Module 2: Electricity
Module 3: Waves

Students will also require the following books:
Edexcel IGCSE Biology (2009) by Phil Bradfield & Steve Potter (ISBN: 978 0 435966 88 1)
Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry (2009) by Jim Clark (ISBN: 978 0 435966 89 8)
Edexcel IGCSE Physics (2009) by Brian Arnold, Steve Woolley, Penny Johnson (ISBN: 9780435966904)
If students are happy to work without cross references to textbook pages given in the course, they may wish instead to buy:

Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they need to keep in regular contact. The essential relationship between student and tutor begins with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan.
All tutors are fully qualified teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. So when you enrol on a home study course you can be assured of the assistance of a professionally qualified subject specific tutor.
We donít set a limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advice and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMAís) in every course. These help the student consolidate the learning he or she has done and prepare for examinations.
All tutors have a local rate telephone number such as a 0845 number. This means that when you phone your tutor it will only cost you the price of a local call. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.
Exams must be taken at a registered examination centre as a private candidate. We offer course materials and tutor support although we are not an examination centre.
Student advisors can assist with finding centres and dealing with coursework forms but we do not book exams for students. You can locate examination centres from the "Find a Centre" page on the Edexcel website: http://www.edexcel.com.
Nearest Examination Dates:
Please review the IGCSE Overview page
for detailed information on possible examination dates and procedures.
IGCSE Examination Fees:
On average the IGCSE examination fee is approximately £35.00 per subject regardless of the amount of examinations, plus an administration fee which is at the discretion of the exam centre.
Studying from Abroad:
It is possible to study any of our home study courses from anywhere in the world. The IGCSE is offered to students in over 150 countries. We advise contacting the British Council or your local schools and colleges to enquire if they can offer the Edexcel IGCSE examinations.
