Economics is concerned with the interdependent behaviour of consumers, producers and governments as they allocate and distribute scarce resources. Economics involves the investigation of the allocation of scarce resources to the production and distribution of income and wealth. Business provides an important context in which economists study resource allocation.
Develop your knowledge with this clear and concise course as you are taken on a tour of the world of economics, exploring topical issues that affect each one of us every day.
Each lesson of the Economics GCSE course begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study. Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment questions, and there are a large number of simply drawn and easy-to-copy illustrations. There are six tutor-marked assignments, one of which is a practice exam paper. No previous knowledge of the economics is assumed or required.
The Syllabus:
This course prepares students for AQA GCSE Economics syllabus 3144 for examination in 2008 and later years. We have chosen this syllabus as it is the most suited to distance learning. The course covers the Higher Tier level. Assessment is by two written papers.
- Paper 1 (2 ½ Hours) is 80% of the total marks. The paper will consist of two sections; Section A containing 4 structured questions, Section B requiring candidates to choose 1 from 2 questions each of which contain structured and open-ended parts.
- Paper 2 (1 Hour) is 20% of the total marks. A problem solving case study paper requiring a written report or answers to questions based on evidence supplied with the paper.
Key Topics Covered:
The course attempts to show the relevance of economics to our everyday lives and our political future.
Coursework:
There is no coursework. It is compulsory for distance learning students to take the written paper option rather than doing coursework.
Additional Reading:
No additional textbook is required to study our economics distance learning course, but there are recommendations for additional reading at appropriate places throughout.
Technical Support:
Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they need to keep in regular contact. The essential relationship between student and tutor begins with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan. All tutors are fully qualified teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. So when you enrol on a course you can be assured of the assistance of a professionally qualified subject specific tutor.
We don’t set a limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advise and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA’s) in every course. These help the student consolidate the learning he or she has done and prepare for examinations. All tutors have a local rate telephone number such as a 0845 number. This means that when you phone your tutor it will only cost you the price of a local call. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.
Examinations:
There are currently over 300 testing centres across the country, so finding one close by is not very difficult. In December/January we contact you to start arranging your examination dates. We always try to give whatever help we can with examination information, but the entering of students for examinations and any dealings with the examination centre’s are entirely the responsibility of the student.
GCSE Examination Fees:
On average the GCSE examination fee is approximately £30 per subject regardless of the amount of examinations, plus an administration fee which is at the discretion of the exam centre.
Studying from Abroad:
It is possible to study any of our courses from anywhere in the world. However some courses are easier to study from abroad than others and some restrictions to the type of tuition available apply. If you wish to study a GCSE or an 'A' level, then you will need to be able to return to the UK to take your examinations. Please remember that most of our GCSEs and 'A' levels have several examinations which may well be spread over several weeks.
