Parlez-vous Francais? Un petit peu? This lively and interactive course combines excellent materials, instructions and an audio CD to enable students who have little French to develop their skills further. It is designed to foster listening, reading, conversational and written skills. To help you start, we have incorporated our preliminary French course in the pack. This will give you a framework of progressive understanding in which to learn.

In developing this specification to meet the needs of the revised National Curriculum, every effort has been made to build on the success of the GCSE and to maintain the philosophy of enabling candidates to show what they “know, understand and can do”. Candidates who have followed this specification will be well prepared to use the language for practical communication and to continue with further study of the language.

Each lesson of the French GCSE course begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study. Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment questions, and there is an accompanying cassette to help strengthen students' abilities to listen to and speak French. There are sixteen tutor-marked assignments.

The Syllabus:
Our French GCSE course prepares students for AQA GCSE French syllabus 3651, for examinations in 2008 and later years. Assessment is by four papers, which test listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The course covers the Higher Tier level. We have chosen this syllabus as it is the most suited to distance learning.
  • Listening Test (40 minutes + 5 minutes reading time). The paper will be mostly short and some longer answer questions.
  • Reading Test (50 Minutes). The paper will be mostly short and some longer answer questions.
  • Writing Test (60 Minutes). This paper will be based upon a letter and a descriptive/imaginative piece.
  • Speaking Test (10-12 Minutes). A role play, a presentation/discussion and a general conversation.
You can find out more information on this syllabus on AQA’s website - AQA – http://www.aqa.org.uk/qual/gcse/french_a.php

The French GCSE course is divided into the following modules:

  • Preliminary Lessons
  • Reading
  • Comprehension Skills
  • Writing Skills
  • Speaking and Listening Skills
Most of the lessons are linked to specific, everyday situations, such as travel bookings, letter writing, giving directions, etc.

Coursework:
There is no coursework with this exam.

Special Requirements:
Some basic knowledge of spoken and written French is assumed, although the first module of the course is designed to enable students to brush up on fundamental French vocabulary and grammar.

Additional Reading:
No additional textbooks are required, but throughout the course there are many ideas and recommendations for further language practice.

Technical Support:
Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they need to keep in regular contact. The essential relationship between student and tutor begins with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan. All tutors are fully qualified teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. So when you enrol on a course you can be assured of the assistance of a professionally qualified subject specific tutor.

We don’t set a limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advise and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA’s) in every course. These help the student consolidate the learning he or she has done and prepare for examinations. All tutors have a local rate telephone number such as a 0845 number. This means that when you phone your tutor it will only cost you the price of a local call. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.

Examinations:
There are currently over 300 testing centres across the country, so finding one close by is not very difficult. In December/January we contact you to start arranging your examination dates. We always try to give whatever help we can with examination information, but the entering of students for examinations and any dealings with the examination centre’s are entirely the responsibility of the student.

GCSE Examination Fees:
On average the GCSE examination fee is approximately £30 per subject regardless of the amount of examinations, plus an administration fee which is at the discretion of the exam centre.

Studying from Abroad:
It is possible to study any of our courses from anywhere in the world. However some courses are easier to study from abroad than others and some restrictions to the type of tuition available apply. If you wish to study a GCSE or an 'A' level, then you will need to be able to return to the UK to take your examinations. Please remember that most of our GCSEs and 'A' levels have several examinations which may well be spread over several weeks.
