Why are earthquakes more likely in San Francisco than in London? Where do people live and why? By taking this course you will have the opportunity to explore the facts and fully prepare for your exam with lessons crammed full of activities, diagrams and illustrations. You will learn how to read maps, interpret geographical data, construct graphs and diagrams, and conduct fieldwork.
The specification is designed to provide students following GCSE geography with a course that develops a sound understanding and knowledge of geographical themes, issues and skills. A people-environment theme has been adopted throughout the specification highlighting the importance of this interaction. The use of examples and case studies is seen as fundamental in the delivery of the specification detail in order to achieve meaningful understanding of the themes being studied. The case studies and examples are to be studied at a variety of scales and in differing environments including areas at various stages of economic development.
Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment questions, and there is a diagrammatic summary at the end of each lesson for ease of revision and guidance for the preparation of coursework. There are seven tutor-marked assignments and three practice exam papers. No previous knowledge of the subject is assumed or required.
The Syllabus:
Our Geography GCSE course prepares students for AQA GCSE Geography syllabus 3031, for exams in 2008 and later years. Assessment is by two written papers (75%) and coursework (25%). We have chosen this syllabus as it is the most suited to distance learning.
You can find out more information on this syllabus on AQA’s website - AQA – http://www.aqa.org.uk/qual/gcse/geo_a.php
The Geography GCSE course is divided into the following modules:
- Geographical Skills: Map work
- Population and Settlement
- Resources and Economic Activities
- Physical Environment and Human Activities
-
Development
Topics covered include developing and developed countries, urbanisation, glaciation, and meteorology.
Coursework:
Coursework is approximately 2500 words based on a fieldwork investigation at a local/small scale. Full guidance is given in the course.
Additional Reading:
No additional textbooks are required, although recommendations for additional reading can be found in the course materials.
Technical Support:
Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they need to keep in regular contact. The essential relationship between student and tutor begins with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan. All tutors are fully qualified teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. So when you enrol on a course you can be assured of the assistance of a professionally qualified subject specific tutor.
We don’t set a limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advise and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA’s) in every course. These help the student consolidate the learning he or she has done and prepare for examinations. All tutors have a local rate telephone number such as a 0845 number. This means that when you phone your tutor it will only cost you the price of a local call. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.
Examinations:
There are currently over 300 testing centres across the country, so finding one close by is not very difficult. In December/January we contact you to start arranging your examination dates. We always try to give whatever help we can with examination information, but the entering of students for examinations and any dealings with the examination centre’s are entirely the responsibility of the student.
GCSE Examination Fees:
On average the GCSE examination fee is approximately £30 per subject regardless of the amount of examinations, plus an administration fee which is at the discretion of the exam centre.
Studying from Abroad:
It is possible to study any of our courses from anywhere in the world. However some courses are easier to study from abroad than others and some restrictions to the type of tuition available apply. If you wish to study a GCSE or an 'A' level, then you will need to be able to return to the UK to take your examinations. Please remember that most of our GCSEs and 'A' levels have several examinations which may well be spread over several weeks.
