Why are earthquakes more likely in San Francisco than in London? Where do people live and why? By taking this course you will have the opportunity to explore the facts and fully prepare for your exam with lessons crammed full of activities, diagrams and illustrations.

The specification is designed to provide students following IGCSE geography with a course that develops a sound understanding and knowledge of geographical themes, issues and skills.

The course is split into the following 6 units:

  • Geographical Skills
  • River Environments
  • Coastal Environments
  • Economic Activity and Energy
  • Urban Environments
  • Fragile Environments
The course includes 8 practical and virtual fieldwork opportunities, and enables students to develop a range of geographical skills as they work with maps, diagrams, graphs, statistics, photographic images and online media.

Students should have internet access to carry out some of the research and lesson activities, some of which will be accessed by password.

The Syllabus:

The Geography IGCSE course is designed to prepare students for the Edexcel IGCSE in Geography (4GE0) for examinations in June 2012 and later years.

The 3 modules are:
  • Module 1: The natural environment and people
  • Module 2: People and their environments
  • Module 3: Global Issues
Examination:

There is a single 2 hour and 45 minute written examination, with a single tier of entry.

Coursework:

No coursework is required.

Additional Reading:

No additional reading required, however the introduction lists additional sourses for students to gain a wider understanding of the subject if required.

Technical Support:

Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they need to keep in regular contact. The essential relationship between student and tutor begins with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan.

All tutors are fully qualified teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. So when you enrol on a course you can be assured of the assistance of a professionally qualified subject specific tutor.

We don’t set a limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advice and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA’s) in every course. These help the student consolidate the learning he or she has done and prepare for examinations.

All tutors have a local rate telephone number such as a 0845 number. This means that when you phone your tutor it will only cost you the price of a local call. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.

Examination Centres:

To request a list of Edexcel registered centres please send an email to the following address: private.candidate@edexcel.com.

Edexcel are currently in the process of putting together a comprehensive list of those centres who provide assistance to private candidates and this will available before the end of the year. For the time being when you send an e-mail, please ensure that you give details of where you live, such as county or postcode and information on what qualifications and specifications you wish to enter.

Nearest Examination Dates:

Please review the IGCSE Overview page for detailed information on possible examination dates and procedures.

IGCSE Examination Fees:

On average the IGCSE examination fee is approximately £35 per subject regardless of the amount of examinations, plus an administration fee which is at the discretion of the exam centre.

Studying from Abroad:

It is possible to study any of our home study courses from anywhere in the world. The iGCSE is offered to students in over 150 countries. We advise contacting the British Council or your local schools and colleges to enquire if they can offer the Edexcel iGCSE examinations.
