Physics is the most fundamental part of science. This course will introduce you to many phenomena and surprising explanations of things we see and take for granted. Carefully designed home-based experiments will reinforce your understanding of theoretical ideas as you are guided through all the main areas of physical science.

A number of straightforward and varied practical tasks, together with simply drawn, easy-to-copy illustrations, also help prepare for the coursework element. There are nine tutor-marked assignments and a practice exam paper.

The Syllabus:
Our Physics GCSE course prepares students for AQA GCSE Science: Physics syllabus 4451, for exams in 2008 and later years. Assessment is by three written paper (75%) and coursework (25%). The course is divided into three modules.

The course is divided into three modules. Each of these modules corresponds to a 45 minute examination:

Physics Paper 1 (45 Minutes) is 25% of the total marks.

  • How do we make things speed up or slow down?
  • What happens to the movement energy when things speed up or slow down?
  • What is momentum?
  • What is static electricity, how can it be used and what is the connection
  • between static electricity and electric currents?
  • What does the current through an electrical circuit depend on?
  • What is mains electricity and how can it be used safely?

  • What happens to radioactive substances when they decay?
  • What are nuclear fission and nuclear fusion?

Physics Paper 2 (45 Minutes) is 25% of the total marks.

  • How is heat (thermal energy) transferred and what factors affect the rate at which heat is transferred?
  • What is meant by the efficient use of energy?
  • Why are electrical devices so useful?
  • How should we generate the electricity we need?
  • What are the uses and hazards of the waves that form the electromagnetic spectrum?
  • What are the uses and dangers of emissions from radioactive substances?
  • What do we know about the universe and how it continues to change?

Physics Paper 3 (45 Minutes) is 25% of the total marks.

  • How do forces have a turning effect?
  • What keeps bodies moving in a circle?
  • What provides the centripetal force for planets and satellites?
  • What do mirrors and lenses do to light?
  • What is sound?
  • What is ultrasound and how can it be used?
  • How can electricity be used to make things move?
  • How do generators work?
  • How do transformers work?
  • What is the life history of stars?
Investigative Skills Assessment is 25% of the total marks.
The investigative skills assignment (ISA) assesses the student’s ability to undertake a task and collect, process and evaluate data. The ISA can be carried out at any time during the course. Students carry out the PSA set by AQA, they then take a written test under controlled conditions. The test asks questions concerning the data collected during the practical task.

Technical Support:
Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they need to keep in regular contact. The essential relationship between student and tutor begins with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan. All tutors are fully qualified teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. So when you enrol on a course you can be assured of the assistance of a professionally qualified subject specific tutor.

We don’t set a limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advise and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA’s) in every course. These help the student consolidate the learning he or she has done and prepare for examinations. All tutors have a local rate telephone number such as a 0845 number. This means that when you phone your tutor it will only cost you the price of a local call. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.

Examinations:
There are currently over 300 testing centres across the country, so finding one close by is not very difficult. In December/January we contact you to start arranging your examination dates. We always try to give whatever help we can with examination information, but the entering of students for examinations and any dealings with the examination centre’s are entirely the responsibility of the student.

GCSE Examination Fees:
On average the GCSE examination fee is approximately £30 per subject regardless of the amount of examinations, plus an administration fee which is at the discretion of the exam centre.

Studying from Abroad:
It is possible to study any of our courses from anywhere in the world. However some courses are easier to study from abroad than others and some restrictions to the type of tuition available apply. If you wish to study a GCSE or an 'A' level, then you will need to be able to return to the UK to take your examinations. Please remember that most of our GCSEs and 'A' levels have several examinations which may well be spread over several weeks.
