The New Year is the most popular time of year for people to think about self-improvement. Talk of New Year’s resolutions is rife and the most common New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight and get more fit and healthy. Whilst these are admirable resolutions, they don’t really address the biggest muscle in your body: your brain. As well as working out your body this January, why not think about working out your mind by learning a new skill and getting a new qualification? Here are a few ways that gaining a new qualification could improve your life and lead to a better and brighter 2014:
Those people who have qualifications relevant to their industry are likely to earn more than their colleagues without the same qualifications. According to recent statistics if you are a graduate with a recognised university degree then your annual earning potential will be a whopping £12,000 more annually than someone without a university degree. Similarly those who have A Levels or vocational qualifications tend to earn more, and work in more fulfilling environments than those who don’t. Finally, new research by the Institute of Fiscal Studies has also shown that adults who were good at maths when they were young children go on to earn more than those who weren’t good at maths. If your maths skills aren’t strong and you feel this is affecting your earning potential then you could always consider taking a maths course: dust off those mathematics textbooks and start improving your skills with our help, at your own pace. You may be surprised by how this ultimately affects your earnings!
One of the reasons many people choose not to research further learning is because they worry they won’t be able to afford it. However gaining new qualifications and joining a distance learning course doesn’t have to cost as much as you might think. Because distance learning is undertaken in your own free time, and fits into your own schedule, you also won’t have to lose any income whilst you study. There’s no need to give up work in order to return to college, so you can earn as you learn without any impact on your income. Check out the wide range of classes available and you’ll be surprised by how affordable they are: learning new skills is not only fun, it’s also a cost-effective hobby too!
Many people find the idea of going back to school or college daunting or scary. Having to walk into a room full of strangers and learn as a group isn’t for everyone: particularly if you’re not sure how long it may take you to learn those new skills, or if it’s been a while since you’ve been in a formal learning environment. With distance learning however there’s no scary classroom. You simply learn at your own pace and from the comfort of your own home. If you pick up the material straight away that’s brilliant: if it takes you a little longer then that’s OK too and you have all the time in the world to get the hang of your brand new skill. All of the courses available provide recognisable qualifications from reputable learning institutions so you won’t be compromising on quality if you opt for distance learning.
Finally, taking the opportunity to learn could change your life. It will enrich your life with skills you didn’t previously possess and give you the chance to get all of the qualifications you might not have been able to get, for whatever reasons, when you were younger. People of an older generation in particular were often unable to attend college or university because they couldn’t afford it and had to go out and get a job instead. New qualifications however could lead to a new career path and ultimately change your life for the better.
