The Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools - Level 3 Course is available to learners 16+ who are working within a school, particularly in the role of a Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant. It is suitable for support workers seeking to apply for Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status. Students who are beginners in this subject area should consider the Level 2 Qualification Course which is also available.
This course provides successful students with a Level 3 Certificate Qualification listed on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Database with 32 credits.
The course aims to enable learners to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools, and provide an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively and in a self-directed way.
It prepares learners to support the Teacher and the delivery of curriculum within a school, as well as developing skills to help children and young people to develop self-esteem, independence and skills for learning. It seeks to further develop professional and technical skills and knowledge, and an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school.
Please Note: It is recommended that students have a suitable placement for the full duration of their studies. We estimate a minimum of 50 hours in total would be required for a suitable placement, although the required time will vary. There is no fixed nor minimum number of placement hours required. The placement needs to be sufficient to enable students to gather the workplace evidence required to demonstrate the range of competencies set out in the course syllabus. A placement which gives access to a setting regularly (say once or twice per week) throughout the planned study period is likely to be most favourable option.
The NCFE Level 3 Supporting Teaching & Learning in Skills Certificate is a competence based qualification which requires students to be employed in a school setting or to have voluntary placement and it is suitable for all roles in schools, including site staff, administrators etc as well as those who work directly with children and young people.
The course seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding that all those working in a school setting will need and covers areas such as safeguarding, communication and understanding the school context.
