The Nutrition and Health – QCF Level 2 Course is designed to give prospective students a good understanding of nutrition and healthy eating and will lead to a relevant qualification.

With rising levels of obesity in both adults and children, the Foresight study have estimated that by 2050 approximately 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children in the UK will be obese. These increasing obesity levels could cost the UK over £40 billion a year through increased care requirements and missed working hours.

This course will teach students the importance of healthy eating whilst considering the nutritional needs of individuals and will give advise about how you can plan a healthy diet.

On successful completion of this course, students will receive a Level 2 QCF Award Qualification with 12 Credits.

The Course covers the following Units:-

  • Unit 1: Explore Principles of Healthy Eating

Learning Outcomes: Understand how an unhealthy diet is associated with lifestyle diseases; Identify which foods provide sources of energy; Calculate your own energy requirements; Identify foods from each of the five food groups; Understand the role of nutrients in maintaining your health; and Identify how a variety of cooking methods can affect the nutritional values of food.

  • Unit 2: Consider Nutritional Needs of a Variety of Individuals

Learning Outcomes: Understand food sources of key nutrients for children, young and older people; Understand the importance of key nutrients; Plan balanced meals for children, young and older people; Understand nutritional recommendations for children, young and older people; Identify special dietary requirements; and Understand the different barriers to healthy eating.

  • Unit 3: Use Food and Nutrition Information to Plan a Healthy Diet

Learning Outcomes: Understand what information must be displayed on food labels; Identify the nutritional information that must be provided on labels; Understand your guideline daily amounts of energy and nutrients; Calculate the energy provided by certain foods; Understand the role of food additives; and Compare your food and drink intake to recommendations of the Balance of Good Health.

Prerequisites:

This course is suitable for students with a basic knowledge of this area, There is no prior learning knowledge or experience required to take this course.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. As the course is self-study, you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period and our student support team is available for any other queries that you may have whilst completing your course.

Assessment:

The NCFE Level 2 Award in Nutrition and Health qualification consists of a combination of internally and externally set assignments which are marked by your tutor and are moderated by NCFE. The certificate is achieved by successfully completing the NCFE candidate workbook in conjunction with the information and exercises provided within our learning materials. Coursework assignments can be returned by email or by post.

On successful completion of this course students will be awarded a Level 2 Award in Nutrition & Health issued by NCFE.

This qualification has been accredited at level 2 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF Qualification No. 501/0038/5) and has 12 credits.

The qualification award is issued through NCFE. NCFE is recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators ('regulators') for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland. This course provides successful students with a qualification listed on the Qualifications and Credit Framework Database, accredited by NCFE at level 2 and assessed through NCC, a licensed NCFE centre. Accreditation by NCFE is a guarantee of quality. It means that this learning programme has been scrutinised and approved by an independent panel of experienced educational professionals and is quality audited biannually by NCFE.
