The Starting a Child Care Business - Level 3 Course is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice setting up a child care venture, ensuring that they are properly local authority registered and conforming to current requirements and standards.

Child care in the UK is highly regulated and requires exacting standards of those involved in providing care for young people. Running a child care or child minding business is very popular but obviously needs to be set up carefully so that the business is properly registered, it operates to current requirements and standards and is planned on a firm financial basis.

This course provides a substantial knowledge and understanding base of good practice, to enable people to plan a child care business which meets current requirements.

The Objective of the Course is to:

Provide a framework for students to develop a structured approach to planning, registering, launching and operating a child care business.

On successful completion on this course students will receive an accredited Level 3 Certificate Award.

The course includes the following units:-

  • Unit 1 - Researching the market

How to conduct research to understand the demand and competition for child care services in your locality.

  • Unit 2 - Setting up your business

How to go about planning and establishing a child-minder, nannying or child care business.

  • Unit 3 - The registration process

Registration requirements to ensure that you are properly registered and approved by your local authority.

  • Unit 4 - Launching your business

Planning to advertise and launch your business venture.

  • Unit 5 - Health, safety and hygiene

Ensuring that your facilities take proper account of health and welfare of children in your care, other staff and adult visitors

  • Unit 6 - Toys and Equipment

Setting up your business with appropriate and suitable equipment

  • Unit 7 - Customer service and parental involvement

Ensuring that you provide effective service and support for parents

  • Unit 8 - Financial Matters

Financial record keeping to keep your business on track.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the course is self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.


You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Most coursework consists of short paragraph answers to set questions. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.


ABC AwardsOn successful completion of this course students will receive a Starting a Child Care Business Certificate of Achievement by ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).

The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future. The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.
