The Counselling and Psychotherapy Course

People will often turn to a Counsellor or Psychotherapist to talk about hard-hitting topics that a regular doctor may not be equipped to deal with. These can include bereavement, stress, depression, eating disorders, and alcohol or drug abuse. By discussing these issues openly in a safe environment, a person may start to feel better and overcome a problem, rather than letting it affect them over a prolonged period.

The Counselling and Psychotherapy course from Distance Learning Centre covers the following topics:

  • The Basics of Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • Models and Approaches of Therapy
  • Types of Counselling
  • Accompanying Treatments
  • Mental Health Conditions
  • Delivery of Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • Listening Skills and Validation
  • How to help Someone in Crisis
  • Common Problems in Counselling and Psychtherapy
  • Abuse and Trauma
  • Useful Strategies
  • Being a Therapist

Completing the required coursework for each of these 12 units will allow a candidate to complete the course successfully. You will have the support of a personal tutor to guide you through each unit, as well as a comprehensive study guide and online resources. The course is normally taken over 4 months but is also dependent on the delivery and completion of coursework.

From completing the Counselling and Psychotherapy course you will receive a Level 4 certificate, and are subsequently advised to gain practical experience with a relevant organisation. This will allow you to put your new-found knowledge into practice by talking through issues one on one and helping people overcome problems.

Candidates are advised to use the completion of this Level 4 course as evidence of prior learning when applying for higher education and degree level courses. This course is a good basis for starting off a career in Counselling, where you can further specialise in tackling a range of problems after studying at a higher level.

This Counselling and Psychotherapy course is available through Distance Leaning Centre, and since it is a home study course it can be started and completed at any time.

Other courses that the Distance Learning Centre provide include Counselling & Coaching Courses, Psychology & Sociology Courses and Mental Health & Behaviour Courses.
