Course Description

The Cake Making Course - QLS Level 2 is designed for students wanting to understand the basic skills, theories and approaches that are using in creating beautiful, imaginative and original cakes that are pleasing to the eye. The course will help you to develop your own skills in designing, baking and decorating your own cakes and will look at the different equipment used. It will show how you can create a cake from new and will examine the different varieties of cakes and fillings and will help you to understand the different types of icing techniques and delve into "Sugar Craft” and how this can be used to decorate cakes.

Whether you have a celebration or party coming up, want to start a new hobby or just want to know more about this popular subject, this cake making course is all the rage at the moment so it’s a perfect time to explore this topic in more detail.

On successful completion of this course students will receive a QLS Level 2 Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards.

Course Format & Delivery

You will receive access to the course materials through an online portal for a 12-month period. Students can use the portal for accessing their course materials, submitting assignments and to log tutor questions. An optional hard-copy book version of the course notes can also be purchased for £35.00.

The following Topics are covered: Textures of cakes; Types of cakes; Multi-tiered cakes; Sculpting cakes; Cupcakes; Layer cakes; and Cake fillings.
The following Topics are covered: Design a cake from scratch; Sketching; Selecting cake types; Equipment; Trial and error; Plan a cake; and Potential obstacles.
The following Topics are covered: Fondant icing; Royal Icing; Butter cream; Marzipan; Sugar paste; and Ganache.
The following Topics are covered: Introduction to sugar craft; Piping; Creating flowers and petals; Sugar paste; Modelling paste; Texture; and Colour visual effects.

There are no particular entry requirements for this course, so students can sign up providing they are comfortable studying at a Level 2 standard.

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Body.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.
