Course Description

The Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) & The Criminal Justice Systems - Level 3 Course is designed to increase awareness of the predisposition to criminal behaviour of someone with FASD.

This course can be beneficial to professionals working in this area or with family members who hold an interest in this subject, and can and help the student to develop increased understanding of the issues and the possible responses and interventions.

This course assumes previous knowledge of FASD together with the primary and secondary disabilities that can be caused by FASD. The course is focused around FASD but students should also consider ARND and ARBD as being associated problems.

With these 3 conditions there will be a range of physical and mental effects including behavioural and learning difficulties which can have lifelong implications to the individual.

This course also covers the secondary behaviours associated with FASD which may cause the individual to be more likely to break the law more frequently than someone unaffected by FASD.

On successful completion of this course, learners will receive a Level 3 Endorsed Certificate of Achievement from QAUK..

The Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) & The Criminal Justice Systems - Level 3 Course Includes the Following Units:
The following topics are covered: Behaviours associated with FASD; FASD - A Predisposition to Criminal Behaviour; Secondary Disabilities in the Absence of Intervention; Supported Services; Offender Pattern; Mistakes made in the Criminal Justice System; and Pre-trial Issues and FASD.
The following topics are covered: Legal Responsibility and Competency; Investigation and Pre-trial; The Trial; The Testimony of a Person with FASD; Assisting the FASD Individual in Court; FASD and the Individual in Custody; Court Recommendations; Competency Evaluation; Management of FASD within the Court System; and Sentencing.
The following topics are covered: FASD - Criminal Justice System; Creating an External Brain; and FASD and Sexual Deviancy.
Course Format & Delivery

You will receive access to the course materials through an online portal for a 12-month period. Students can use the portal for accessing their course materials, submitting assignments and to log tutor questions.

Please Note: An optional hard-copy version of the course notes can be purchased for an additional £48.00. This is useful for learners who also want to study away from the computer and means they have course notes they can keep and refer back to beyond their online course license.

Delivery of the hard-copy materials is usually within 5 to 10 working days by a recorded delivery service.

Entry Requirements

As this is a self-study course, you can enrol at any time. There are no particular entry requirements for this course, and learners can enrol providing they feel comfortable studying at a Level 3 standard.

Course Duration & Online Support

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted through the online portal or by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Organisation.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.

Assessment

Learners will be required to complete a number of assignments. Your personal tutor will review, mark and provide you with feedback on your work. Coursework assignments can be returned by uploading to the online portal, by email or by post, and assignment marking will usually take between 5–10 working days.

We recommend that assignments are completed and returned as word-processed documents through the online portal. Handwritten documents can be accepted but need to be clear and legible and may be subject to a longer marking time.

QAUK Level 3 Certificate of Achievement

On successful completion of this course, students will receive a Level 3 Certificate of Achievement issued by QAUK.

QAUK is a UK-based awarding organisation specialising in course endorsement across a wide range of learning and training sectors. With a dedicated team and years of industry insight, they offer a flexible and supportive endorsement process designed for training providers, educators, and organisations delivering bespoke or sector-specific programmes.

The certification has been accredited by QAUK and leads to a certificate of achievement. It is not an Ofqual-regulated qualification, and the certificate is evidence of the knowledge and skills gained by completing the course. The learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner. The course itself has been designed by NCC to meet specific learners’ and/or employers’ requirements which cannot be satisfied through current regulated qualifications.

You can find more information on level descriptors from our Certification Overview Page.

*Regulated qualification refers to those qualifications that are regulated by Ofqual / CCEA / Qualification Wales
