The Surveying Technologies Theory Course is ideal for students wanting to learn about the responsibilities and skills required as a building or quantity surveyor. The course is an introduction and can be used prior to further practical training or a job role. The course is suitable as a piece of initial training for a new starter, or as a refresher for anyone already working in this sector. In the course you will become familiar with equipment used in quantity surveying as well as the terminology and mathematics involved.

On successful completion of this course students will receive an accredited Level 3 Certificate of Achievement.

Health, safety and welfare are of paramount importance to any organisation operating within the construction industry. The Health and Safety Executive’s annual league table of fatal injuries shows the construction sector consistently tops the table.

The UK and European Union have created a legal framework for prosecuting employers and employees who disregard health, safety and welfare legislation.

To reduce the significant accident record in construction, employers must formulate workplace safety policies. These must address the hazards, risks, policies, the organisational and control arrangements required to promote health, safety and welfare, and be communicated to all parties.

The unit will provide learners with knowledge and understanding of the legal framework relating to employer and employee responsibilities.

An understanding of the principal causes of typical accidents and the associated costs of these will be developed, and learners will explore the methods used to identify workplace hazards in construction, together with the strategies used to control them including the use of risk assessments and monitoring and review procedures. Learners will become familiar with the roles and responsibilities of personnel and with the procedures required following the occurrence of accidents.

  • Measuring, Estimating and Tendering Processes in Construction and the Built Environment.(60 Hours):

This unit details how to:

  • Record dimensions and descriptions of construction work in a methodical way and process these into final quantities for varying purposes, e.g. bills of quantities, variations, final account, interim payments, claims, etc.

  • Understand the purpose of estimating and the common techniques used to price construction work.

  • Calculate all-in costs of materials, labour and plant, together with unit rates, for a variety of construction work.

  • Derive approximate quantities and costs to determine the approximate value of building projects at varying pre-contract development design stages and to understand the limitations on the accuracy that might be achieved.

  • Understand the purpose of tendering, the common techniques used and the relevant documentationand explain the factors that can affect the level of tenders.

  • Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering (60 Hours):

This unit details how to

  • Understand surveying terminology and be able to use the equipment and instruments typically used to perform linear surveys, record the measurements in a standard from and produce drawings.

  • Be able to use the equipment and instruments typically used to perform levelling surveys, record the measurements in a standard form and produce drawings.

  • Be able to use the equipment and instruments typically used to measure angles, record the measurements in a standard form and produce results from calculations.

  • Be able to perform the setting out of small buildings.

Prerequisites:

There are no particular entry requirements.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the home study courses are self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.

Assessment:

The course includes 3 tutor marked assignments (TMAs) and some self assessment exercises. You will only be assessed on the tutor marked assignments which can be submit to your course tutor by email (Word Processed Document) or by post.

Certification:

ABC AwardsOn successful completion of this course students will receive a Surveying Technologies Theory Certificate of Achievement by ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).
