The Diabetes Care for the Elderly – Level 2 Course is aimed at those working in, or wanting to work in the Health Care sector, and is designed to give the student an essential knowledge in offering the very best professional approach to the management of diabetes.

This distance learning Diabetes Care for the Elderly programme has been written for those who are involved in the care sector and is aimed to give all staff, supervisors and managers the essential knowledge needed to offer the very best professional approach to the management of diabetes. This course will help students to become more effective in many areas of their work, from understanding diabetes to helping others cope with it.

On successful completion of this course students will receive an accredited Level 2 Certificate of Achievement.

Students can use the portal for accessing their course materials, submitting assignments and to log tutor questions. A hard-copy book version of the course notes are also supplied. The following topics are included: Detecting foot problems; High blood pressure; Blood glucose control; Eye testing; Medication for diabetes; Insulin; and Care plan.

  • Unit 4 - Complications of Diabetes

The following topics are included: Atherosclerosis; Heart disease; Strokes; Diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy); Diabetic eye problems; Diabetic retinopathy; Cataracts; Glaucoma; Diabetic neuropathy; Susceptibility to infection such as urinary tract infections (UTIs); Skin and mouth conditions; Osteoporosis; Hearing problems; Impotence and erectile problems; High cholesterol; Gastroparesis; Ketones; Ketoacidosis; Hyperglycaemia; and Hypoglycaemia.

  • Unit 5 - Diet and Nutrition in Diabetes

The following topics are included: Diet; A few diabetic food myths; Losing weight with diabetes; Diets to avoid; Eating plan for a diabetic; Alcohol; Understanding carbohydrates; Fats; Proteins; and Water.

  • Unit 6 - Management of Diabetic Emergencies

The following topics are included: Diabetic ketoacidosis; Hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic nonketotic syndrome (HHNS); Hypoglycaemia; and Hyperglycaemia.

  • Unit 7 - Management of Diabetes in the Elderly

The following topics are included: Depression; Seasonal affective disorder; Infections; Urinary incontinence in the elderly; and Gum disease in the elderly.

  • Unit 8 - Diabetic Foot Care

The following topics are included: Foot problems; Peripheral neuropathy; Charcot's foot; Arthritis; Gangrene; Tips to reduce problems with feet; Cause for concern; What to be observant of; and Points to be aware of when looking after a diabetics feet.

  • Unit 9 - Dealing with Viruses

The following topics are included: Viruses; Personal hygiene; The norovirus; Cleaning up; Food poisoning; Shingles; and Cold sores.

Prerequisites:

There is no prior learning knowledge or experience required to take this course.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. As the course is self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.

You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period and our student support team are also available for any other queries that you may have whilst completing your course.

Assessment:

You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Most coursework consists of a series of tutor marked assignments together with an end of course multi-choice questionnaire, will lead you to the highly acclaimed ABC Awards Certificate Award. Coursework assignments can be returned by uploading to the online portal, by email or by post.

We recommend that assignments are completed and returned as word-processed documents through the online portal. Handwritten documents can be accepted but need to be clear and legible and may be subject to a longer marking time.

Certification:

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards and Certa Awards Quality Licence Scheme. This means that NCC has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained.
