The Cake Making – Level 2 Course is designed for students wanting to understand the basic skills, theories and approaches that are using in creating beautiful, imaginative and original cakes that are pleasing to the eye. The course will help you to develop your own skills in designing, baking and decorating your own cakes and will look at the different equipment used. It will show how you can create a cake from new and will examine the different varieties of cakes and fillings and will help you to understand the different types of icing techniques and delve into "Sugar Craft” and how this can be used to decorate cakes.

  • Unit 3: Cake Types & Fillings

The following Topics are covered: Textures of cakes; Types of cakes; Multi-tiered cakes; Sculpting cakes; Cupcakes; Layer cakes; and Cake fillings.

  • Unit 4: Cake Design

The following Topics are covered: Design a cake from scratch; Sketching; Selecting cake types; Equipment; Trial and error; Plan a cake; and Potential obstacles.

  • Unit 5: Icing

The following Topics are covered: Fondant icing; Royal Icing; Butter cream; Marzipan; Sugar paste; and Ganache.

  • Unit 6: Sugar Craft

The following Topics are covered: Introduction to sugar craft; Piping; Creating flowers and petals; Sugar paste; Modelling paste; Texture; and Colour visual effects.


There are no particular entry requirements for this course and it is available to anyone interested in the subject.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the home study courses are self-study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.


The Cake Making course is assessed by a series of assignments, which are submitted to and marked by your tutor. You are required to do some of your own research for your assignments. There is no external examination required.


ABC AwardsOn successful completion of this course students will receive a Cake Making Certificate of Achievement by ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).

The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future. The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.
