The Spanish IGCSE Course is designed to foster listening, reading, conversational and written Spanish skills. This lively and interactive course combines paper-based materials and an audio CD.

The course is not intended for complete beginners and it assumes that students have some experience of the Spanish language. This doesn’t have to be too broad and the first few lessons are designed to remind students of the basic building blocks of the Spanish language and to prepare them for the IGCSE-style exercises in the rest of the course. The course pack includes a preliminary Spanish course in the pack which can give you a framework of progressive understanding in which to learn.

The home study course consists of 5 modules and 37 lessons in total, with 8 Tutor Marked Assessments (including a practice oral assessment).

The Spanish IGCSE course is divided into the following five modules:

  • Module 1: About Me
  • Module 2: Day to Day Life
  • Module 3: Holidays & Travel
  • Module 4: Modern Life
  • Module 5: Speaking & Listening Skills

Each lesson of the Spanish IGCSE Course begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study. There is an oral module covered in the course with a CD Rom to accompany it. This relates to the oral examination available to students.

The Syllabus:

The home study course is designed to prepare students for the Edexcel IGCSE in Spanish (4SP0) for examination in May/June 2018.

Please Note: This specification will be available until the May/June 2018 exams, and a new specification (4SP1) with the new grading system (9 - 1) has been introduced in 2017 for first exams in May/June 2019. A course for the new specification is now available for students wanting to sit their exams in 2019. Please contact us if you want further information on the 2019 specification.

Examinations:

Assessment is by two written papers and a speaking test.

  • Paper 1 - Listening: 35 Minutes
  • Paper 2 - Reading & Writing: 1 Hour 30 Minutes
  • Speaking Test: A maximum of 10 minutes

Please Note: This course provides preparatory exercises, etc, for the speaking exam, but this component can be the biggest challenge for distance learning students. Depending on your circumstances, it is advisable to find as many ways as as possible to gain practical experience of conversational Spanish.

Prerequisites:

Students are expected to have a basic understanding of Spanish.

Additional Reading:

No additional reading is required, although there are some suggestions for supplementary reading in the course introduction.

Student Support:

Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they should keep in regular contact. All tutors are fully qualified experienced teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. Most work from home and are able to offer flexible contact times. The tutor will contact students with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan. They will also let the student know the best ways and times for contact.

There is no limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advice and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA's) in every course. These help the student to consolidate their learning and prepare for examinations.

All tutors have a Freephone 0800 telephone number and most will have Skype capabilities. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.

Examination Centres:

All IGCSE Exams must be taken at a registered examination centre as a private candidate. We offer course materials and tutor support although we are not an examination centre. An Examinations Officer can assist with finding centres and dealing with coursework forms for all registered students but we do not book exams on behalf of students.

If you would like to research exam centres prior to enrolment then we would advise contacting Edexcel for a list of Edexcel registered centres in your area. Edexcel exam centres are able to submit entries for any qualification that they are approved to offer.

Nearest Examination Dates:

Please review the IGCSE Overview page for detailed information on possible examination dates and procedures.

IGCSE Examination Fees:

Examination fees need to be paid direct to your chosen exam centre. Prices for exams will vary depending on the exam centre's administration costs. You can find out further information about the Private Candidate process and locate suitable exam centres by contacting Edexcel .

Studying from Abroad:

It is possible to study any of our home study courses from anywhere in the world. The IGCSE is offered to students in over 150 countries. We advise contacting the British Council or your local schools and colleges to enquire if they can offer the Edexcel IGCSE examinations.
