5 Reasons to Get an ECDL Qualification

We live in a digital society. According to the Office for National Statistics, 78% of British adults access the internet every day, yet the vast majority of us have received little to no formal IT training. For those of us who haven't grown up as digital natives, it can seem hard to keep up.

This is where the European Computer Driving Licence, or "ECDL", comes in. The ECDL is a formal IT qualification that demonstrates that the holder can use a computer confidently and effectively. If you're a novice or intermediate computer user looking to give your IT skills a boost, obtaining an ECDL qualification may well be for you.

Still not sure? Here are five reasons it pays to get an ECDL qualification.

As the name "European Computer Driving License" suggests, the ECDL qualification is recognised across Europe, not to mention further afield. In the UK alone, more than 2 million people have sat the ECDL exam since 1997, and the qualification is accredited by the Chartered Institute for IT. This means that an ECDL qualification is both widely recognised and respected. In other words: employers know what it is and are familiar with what its holders can do.

By enrolling on an ECDL course, learners improve their understanding of computers and gain a wide range of useful skills. The ECDL syllabus comprises eight modules, which include:

  • Security for IT users
  • IT user fundamentals
  • Word processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Database software
  • Presentation software
  • Internet and email
  • Improving productivity using IT

Learners obtaining an ECDL qualification with the Distance Learning Centre have access to all eight modules, and can choose to study them all or focus exclusively on those that best suit their individual needs.

Computers are an increasingly integral part of our everyday lives. At home, we use them to do our shopping, book holidays and search for restaurants. At work, we type documents, send emails, set up video calls and put together presentations. No matter what your specific reasons for wanting an ECDL qualification are, enrolling on an ECDL course will make you more confident at using computers in all aspects of your life.

If you're one of the estimated three-quarters of working Brits who regularly use computers as part of their jobs, an ECDL qualification is a great way to demonstrate your computer literacy to employers. Many major companies, including the NHS, Sainsbury's and HSBC, actually require that their office staff hold an ECDL qualification. For others, an ECDL qualification will simply give you a competitive edge.

Thanks to distance learning, it's never been easier to combine study with other commitments, such as work or family. Distance learning allows you to study at times that are convenient to you, in the comfort of your own home, and at an affordable price.

Take the ECDL Online Course we offer here at Distance Learning Centre, for example. For a cost of just £175.00, which can be spread out over four monthly payments, our learners have access to all course materials and tutor support for up to 12 months. This gives students the flexibility they need to achieve their learning goals at a pace that suits them.

If students would prefer to gain a qualification without sitting the ECDL tests then we also have the IT Essentials - Level 2 (RQF) Course which covers the same content as the ECDL and leads to a Level 2 Certificate Qualification with 32 Credits through the submission of coursework.
