The Managing Children’s Behaviour - Level 2 Course has been developed to give you key information regarding this crucial aspect of managing behaviour effectively in bringing up children.

Bringing up happy, healthy, well-adjusted children has been something of a challenge since time immemorial. And, as you can imagine in today’s fast-moving world, getting it right is more important than ever.

The course has been designed to help both parents and childcare practitioners build up a suitable framework for managing a child’s behaviour.

On successful completion of the course students will receive an accredited Level 2 Certificate of Achievement.

Course Objectives:

You will learn to:

  • Recognise the different types of behaviour in children

  • Understand the various factors influencing a child’s behaviour

  • Encourage positive behaviour in children

  • Set guidelines to deal with unwanted behaviour

  • Write and maintain suitable child management policies

  • Understand the importance of observation and assessment

  • Spot the warning signs of a child being bullied

  • Identify strategies for dealing with bullying

The Course Includes the Following Units:-

  • Unit 1 – An Introduction to Behaviour

The following topics are covered: Different types of behaviour; and Children’s needs.

  • Unit 2 – The Factors Influencing a Child’s Behaviour

The following topics are covered: Race, Culture and religion; Separation and divorce; Re-marriage; Bereavement; The birth of a new baby; Moving house; Child abuse; Gender; Age; Short term unwanted behaviour; and Long term unwanted behaviour.

  • Unit 3 – Encouraging Positive Behaviour in Children

The following topics are covered: Using rewards.

  • Unit 4 – Guidelines for Dealing with Unwanted Behaviour

The following topics are covered: Setting boundaries; Policies; Sticking to rules; Tantrums; and Bribery.

  • Unit 5 – Responding to Unwanted Behaviour

The following topics are covered: Ignoring the behaviour; Distraction; and Play therapy.

  • Unit 6 – Observing & Assessing Children’s Behaviour

The following topics are covered: Progress; Personality; Responding; and Health.

  • Unit 7 – Physical Punishment

The following topics are covered: The Smacking debate; The Law and smacking; and Is smacking an appropriate punishment?.

  • Unit 8 – Communicating with Parents

The following topics are covered: Parenting styles; Missing mummy?; and Seeking additional support.

  • Unit 9 – Bullying

The following topics are covered: The bully; The victim; Seeking help and support; and Bullying policies.


There are no particular entry requirements.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the home study courses are self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.


You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Most coursework consists of short paragraph answers to set questions, and a larger essay/case study assignment. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.


At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards and Certa Awards Quality Licence Scheme. This means that Kendal Publishing has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained.

The Learner Unit Summary may be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.
