The Creative Writing – Level 3 Course is designed to help students take the important first steps into this highly creative subject area. Over the past decade there has been a rapid rise in the popularity of Creative Writing as a subject area.

Creative Writing could be any writing outside of the usual professional, journalistic or academic forms of literature. It has become one of the most popular pastimes for people wanting to share short stories, poetry, songs or even those wanting to write a novel, Autobiography/Memoir or a screenplay!

Whether you are writing just for enjoyment or because you want to make it a career, this course will help you to explore your writing and find ways to improve it. The course includes writing exercises and assignments that you will submit to your tutor.

On successful completion on this course students will receive an accredited Level 3 Certificate of Achievement.

This home study course is split into the following Units:

  • Unit 1 - Autobiography

The following topics are covered: Autobiographical writing; Diaries; and Journals and letters.

  • Unit 2 - Short Stories

The following topics are covered: Developing an idea; Preparing an outline; Openings; Conflict; Characters; and Dialogue and viewpoints.

  • Unit 3 - Novels

The following topics are covered: Reading for writing; Themes; Plot; Character; Conflict; Viewpoints; and What other writers say.

  • Unit 4 - Younger Readers

The following topics are covered: Remembering; Starting a story; Action writing; Dialogue; and Poetry for younger readers.

  • Unit 5 - Genre

The following topics are covered: What genre means; Gothic horror; Crime; Science fiction; and Magical realism.

  • Unit 6 - Play Writing

The following topics are covered: Dialogue; Listening to people; Character; Choosing your subject; and Constructing plays.

  • Unit 7 - Poetry

The following topics are covered: Observation; Word pictures; and The sound of poetry.

  • Unit 8 - Non-Fiction

The following topics are covered: Types of non-fiction writing; Travel writing; and Biography.

  • Unit 9 - Articles

The following topics are covered: Types and style of article; Finding and recording the facts; Interviewing; and Going public

  • Unit 10 - Reviews

The following topics are covered: Being a critic; Book reviews; Getting your enthusiasm across; Points of view; and Consumer reviews.

Prerequisites:

There are no particular entry requirements.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the home study courses are self-study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.

Assessment:

The course contains a number of Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) which your tutor will mark and give you valuable feedback on. These assignments can be returned by email. The course also contains self-assessment exercises which are not assessed by the tutor but are designed to help you gauge your progress.

Certification:

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards and Certa Awards Quality Licence Scheme. This means that Kendal Publishing has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained.

The Learner Unit Summary may be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.
