This course builds upon a students existing manual coding skills to teach you how to develop Web documents using new elements, attributes and selectors introduced in HTML5 and CSS3.

The CIW Advanced HTML5 & CSS3 Specialist Course includes the following items:

In this course students will create Web pages using the HTML5 structure elements, embed video and audio, and develop cross-browser user-input forms. They will also use CSS3 to position and format content, and to create effects such as transformations, transitions and animation. Students will also learn basic JavaScript coding, and use HTML5 APIs (application programming interfaces) to extend the functionality of Web pages with modern features such as geolocation, drag-and-drop, canvas and offline Web applications. In addition, the course also teaches techniques for code validation and testing, form creation, inline form field validation, and mobile design for browsers and apps, including Responsive Web Design (RWD).

Skills Taught:

The course teaches the following skills: Demonstrate advanced uses of the canvas element; Implement JavaScript to create interactive pages; Validate HTML5 code; Identify ways to determine browser compatibility for a page or device; Implement HTML5 forms; Use CSS3 to shape content on the page; Design for mobile devices; Implement HTML5 APIs; Identify program flow issues in relation to JavaScript-based applications; and Design pages for a cloud-based store front. The CIW Practice Exams consist of a variety of tests designed to help reinforce learning and assess the students’ knowledge of specific skills objectives. CIW Practice Exams consist of standard practice exams, objective reviews and quizzes, reinforcement tests and self-assessment tests.

  • PSI Exam Voucher (Optional - £100.00)

PSI Testing is a remote video proctoring service and allows you to take CIW exams from the comfort of your own home or office. The system requires an active webcam and stable high speed Internet connection. A live proctor will visually monitor the student and the exam during the entire testing session.

Please Note: Extensions for the online content can be purchased if you need to extend your studies. We will email students prior to their access expiring to see if they require a one-year extension.


The Advanced HTML5 And CSS3 Specialist course teaches intermediate and advanced HTML5 and CSS3 coding skills, as well as introductory JavaScript. Before taking this course, students should have completed the CIW Site Development Associate section of the CIW Web Foundations series or an equivalent beginners HTML and CSS course.

Apple Mac Users: We recommend this course is completed on a PC with the Windows Operating System. The course can be run on an Apple Macs using software such as Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop 7, VMware fusion or CrossOver Mac although we cannot support any issues that may occur with PC-Based software running on a Mac.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time. The course is designed as a self-study course but you do have full support from our own support team and from CIW. As the course is self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer, and we do not impose a cut-off date for study.

CIW Examinations:

CIW HTML5 & CSS3 CourseOn Completion of this curriculum, students can apply for the internationally recognised CIW Advanced HTML5 and CSS3 Specialist 1D0-620 Examination. CIW exams can be sat at registered Pearson VUE testing centres or via the PSI Remote testing system. The exam consists of 55 questions over 75 minutes and the passing score is 72.73%.
